Iron Valley

Herrick Smith - Kansas

Herrick Hill Smith was born and raised in Saint Augustine, Florida, and grew up adventuring in the woods and developed a love for natural beauty. Through high school and college he worked as a blacksmith at a museum about colonial Spanish Florida and earned his BA in Economics from the University of North Florida in 2013. He then moved to Kansas and apprenticed at Spinning Earth Pottery with Danny Meisinger. In fall of 2014 he began graduate school at Fort Hays State University pursuing an MFA in Ceramics with the goal of becoming a college professor of ceramics and sculpture.

Iron Valley is an iron and concrete outdoor installation piece with 4 components referencing the landscape of western Kansas. With each component spaced 6 feet apart the viewer is invited to walk in and around the piece. This allows the viewer to explore the implied valley and mentally wander about the landscape.
