4. San Francisco North

Kasey Stertz, KS

Kasey Stertz is currently pursuing an MFA in sculpture at the University of Kansas. She also has earned BS degrees in mathematics and physics and an MA in architecture. Having such a diverse background allows Stertz to experiment with fusing science, art, and architecture together within her work. Recent pieces incorporate digital fabrication technology, enabling the generation of complex structures influenced by topographical forms.

"San Francisco North" highlights the intersection of natural topographic landscape and human civilization. The piece has infinite possible visual combinations and a single solved state in which the viewer can see the map wrapping around the column.  It is crafted from marine grade plywood cut by CNC machine. Bearings allow each piece to rotate individually around a steel center pole.

San Francisco North can be purchased for $5,000.
